Abstract

This paper provides a description of the Swedish model up to the 1970s. The Swedish model was established in the 1930s. at the background of the world economic crisis. The basic ingredients of the Swedish model in its golden years, in the 1950s and 1960s, can be summarized in the following points: centralized wage negotiations between employers and employees, a wage solidarity policy, an active labour market policy, a restrictive aggregate demand, collective capital accumulation, a large public sector and a welfare state. In the 1970s, the performance of the Swedish economy deteriorated. A number of reasons for this deterioration can be found both within the Swedish model itself and in the external shocks in the World economy in the 1970s.
